Despite their name, not all the carbonaceous chondrites are rich in carbon. Many contain abundant water. Some even possess complex organic molecules like amino acids, albeit of nonbiologic origin.

Except for gases like helium and light elements such as lithium, the compositions of CI chondrites and the Sun are similar. CI chondrites represent the average composition of the Solar System’s primordial dust.
